Requiring a Job Code When Clocking In

How to require employees to select a job code before clocking in, and how to apply the requirement to specific roles

You can make job code selection mandatory at clock-in, either for all employees or only for specific roles. When required, an employee cannot complete clocking in until they select a job code.

Getting There

Click the gear icon at the bottom of the left navigation to open Settings, then select Job Codes. The requirement setting is at the bottom of the page below your list of job codes.

Setting Up the Requirement

  1. Toggle Require a job code to clock in to On.

  2. A Which roles must select a job code at clock-in? dropdown appears.

  3. Select the roles that should be required to choose a job code. Defaults to All roles. You can narrow it to specific roles — employees in roles not selected can still clock in without choosing a job code.

Changes save automatically.

💡 Even when job codes are not required, employees can always choose one voluntarily at clock-in or start a job mid-shift. The requirement setting simply controls whether they're blocked from clocking in without one.

What Employees See

When the requirement is enabled, the clock-in screen on the web time clock and shared time clock shows a "What job code are you working on?" dropdown before the employee can complete the clock-in. On mobile, the same dropdown appears on the clock-in screen. The Clock In button remains grayed out until a job code is selected.
